Young grew up in Houston, Texas, in the Hiram Clarke area, where he was mostly nurtured by his mother and grandmother. Due to a 2003 burglary conviction and jail sentence, Vince’s father, Vincent Young Sr., missed much of Vince’s college years. Young attributes his protection from street gangs to his mother and grandma. Young was injured by a car while riding his bicycle at the junction of Tidewater and Buxley streets in his Houston neighbourhood when he was seven years old. After the bicycle’s handlebar slid into his stomach, the accident almost killed him, and he spent months in the hospital. He now considers himself to be a “tougher” person as a result of this experience.
Young donned the #10 to honour his mother, Felicia Young, who celebrates her birthday on June 10. Young went to Hiram Clarke’s Dick Dowling Middle School. Some of Young’s companions were members of the local street gang “Hiram Clarke Boys,” and many of them perished as a result of their activity.
