Werner Vogels earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from The Hague University of Applied Sciences in June 1989. Henri Bal and Andy Tanenbaum supervised Vogels’ PhD in Computer Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Werner Vogels studied radiography, both diagnosis and therapy, after completing his required military duty in the Royal Netherlands Navy. From 1979 until 1985, he worked at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoekziekenhuis, which is part of the Netherlands Cancer Institute. He returned to university in 1985 to pursue a degree in computer science. He went on to work in computer science research after finishing his degree.

Vogels worked as a senior researcher at INESC in Lisboa, Portugal, from 1991 until 1994.

He worked on fault-tolerant distributed systems alongside Paulo Verissimo and Luis Rodrigues, eventually refining the Delta-4 project’s dependable group communication technology.

He was invited to Cornell University’s computer science department as a visiting scientist in 1994. Vogels worked as a research scientist at Cornell University’s Computer Science Department from 1994 to 2004. He primarily focused on corporate systems that are scalable and dependable. He has published several conference and journal papers, mostly on distributed systems technologies for corporate computer systems.

In 1997, he co-founded Reliable Network Solutions, Inc. with Kenneth Birman and Robbert van Renesse. The corporation has patents on computer network resource monitoring and multicast protocols in the United States. He served as the company’s vice president and chief technology officer from 1999 to 2002.

He became the director of systems research at Amazon in September 2004. In January 2005, he was designated chief technology officer, and in March of that year, he was promoted to vice president.

In a paper describing Amazon’s Dynamo, the storage engine for Amazon’s shopping cart, Vogels detailed the deep technical aspect of Amazon’s infrastructure work.
