God designed us to experience emotions, particularly challenging ones like grief, rage, and loneliness, so we can grow from working through them. Despite temporarily relieving the stress of experiencing our difficult emotions by numbing ourselves, the more we strive to do so, the more we put our souls to sleep. This greatly reduces the quantity of God’s wonder we are able to observe and appreciate. We simply miss out on a lot of what God is doing in our lives when we’re numb.
When we are anxious, God provides us a better option: turning to him rather than our addictions. The only source of contentment that lasts is God.
