J. and her younger sister, Karen Casey (née Houghton; born 1958), were raised by their mother. M. J. eventually remarried, businessman Harry Shannon (1926–2003), who assisted her and Karen in their upbringing. Steven “Steve” Shannon, her mother’s brother, was born as a result of her mother’s marriage to Harry.

Shannon’s business partner allegedly left with all of the company’s funds three months after the family moved to Oxnard, California, so the family returned to San Diego.
