Does God Require Prayer Before Meals?
Although I’m not aware of any passage in the Bible where it is mandated that you pray before eating, I believe it to be a good custom and etiquette since it first and foremost thank God for giving us the ability to eat. That’s not a big concern for us Americans because we eat so much that we have to stop, but a large portion of the world doesn’t know when or where they will get their next meal. They are therefore pleading and saying, “God, thank you for providing my needs for this day. Give us this day our daily bread.”
The majority of Jesus’ audience was underprivileged, and they prayed for it. Saying so is a recognition of God’s omnipotence “Yeah, I work hard and I sweat to put food on the table, but God gave me the ability to do that. God gave me the opportunity to do that, and ultimately I’m here because God is here.”
