Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in Arlington, Virginia, the daughter of Helga Mathilde (née Meyer 1942-2000), a German opera singer and voice teacher, and John Wilson Bullock (1925–2018), an Army employee and part-time voice coach from Birmingham, Alabama. Her father, who had been in control of the Army’s Military Postal Service in Europe, met her mother in Nuremberg. Her parents married in Germany.

Bullock’s maternal grandfather was a Nuremberg-born German rocket scientist. Her family relocated to Arlington, where her father worked for the Army Materiel Command before becoming a Pentagon contractor. Gesine Bullock-Prado, Bullock’s younger sister, served as president of Bullock’s production company Fortis Films.

Bullock was raised in Nuremberg, Germany, as well as Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, for 12 years and grew up speaking German. In Nuremberg, she received a Waldorf education.

She was an executive producer on the George Lopez sitcom (co-produced with Robert Borden and Bruce Helford), which received a $10 million syndication deal. Bullock attempted to make a film based on F.X. Toole’s short story Million Dollar Baby, but the studios were uninterested in a female boxing drama. Clint Eastwood eventually adapted and directed the story as the Oscar-winning film Million Dollar Baby (2004). All About Steve, which was released in September 2009, was also produced by Fortis Films. Her father, John Bullock, was the company’s CEO, and her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, served as the company’s former president.

She donated $1 million to relief efforts in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, and she donated the same amount again following the 2011 Tsunami. In 2017, she donated $1 million to Red Cross relief efforts in Texas following Hurricane Harvey.

Bullock, along with other celebrities, made a public service announcement urging people to sign a petition in support of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. Sandra Bullock supports the Texas nonprofit organization The Kindred Life Foundation, Inc. (KLF) and joined other top celebrities in late 2008 in supporting KLF’s founder and CEO, Amos Ramirez. “Amos has led many efforts across our nation that have helped families in need,” Bullock said at a fundraising gala for the organization. Bullock was inducted into the Warren Easton Hall of Fame in 2012 for her charitable contributions. She received the Favorite Humanitarian Award at the 39th People’s Choice Awards in 2013 for her contributions to Warren Easton High School in New Orleans, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
