Prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory: You might wish to think about adding a prayer for the souls imprisoned in purgatory as part of your daily prayer cycle. There is a special prayer for each day of the week that must be said on that day. All year long, we are able to pray for the souls of both strangers and loved ones by doing our daily prayers.
There are several ways we might offer prayers for the unfortunate souls incarcerated in purgatory. There is the one-time Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great, in which the St. Gertrude Chaplet may be used to pray for as many as 50,000 people.
A daily prayer cycle is an option for those of us who would like to be able to pray for the souls in purgatory on a much more frequent basis. We can plead to God in the hope of assisting in the release of those souls who have been redeemed by saying the following prayers on the specified day of the week.
The Teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
“All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death, they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.” (CCC 1030)
“This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: ‘Therefore Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.’” (CCC 1032)
“From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:
“Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.” (CCC 1032)
Prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
Prayer of Saint Gertrude the Great
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home, and within my family. Amen.
Prayer For Souls In Purgatory To Be Free
Please, Lord hear your holy church as we assemble before your grace and mercy as unworthy sinners and ask that your holy presence and priceless blood may bring comfort and redemption to the helpless souls in purgatory. O Lord, grant them eternal peace while you continue to expose all of their transgressions and terrible deeds to the light of day.
Bring all the souls in purgatory to your heavenly abode, and through the precious blood of your divine son, let the neglected and poorly pure souls be admitted to heaven. We make this request in honor of all the struggles that your heavenly son, Jesus Christ, has endured. Amen.
Prayer For The Souls In Purgatory After Suicide
Oh my God, We adore you and want to express our sincere gratitude to you for giving us life. We are aware that we are called to live up to your name in whatever we do. Please pardon (the deceased’s name), as he had no idea what he was doing. Let him begin a fresh chapter by being absolved of everything he has done in the past. Amen.
Prayer For The Souls In Purgatory To Take Away Their Suffering
Oh my God! I offer prayers for every soul in purgatory[1]. Lord, have pity on them and give them eternal life and salvation. May your holy heart show mercy to the souls in purgatory who are suffering.
For their miserable souls to find the path to your glory and happiness in your arms as our everlasting creator, Father, I offer you this wonderful sacrament in order that you may deliver them from the torment of hell and make a way for them through your temporary punishment.
As we recognize and honor your tremendous presence, we implore you to extend your kindness and mercy to the suffering souls and grant them eternal peace. Peace be upon them. Amen.
Prayer During All Souls’ Day (November 2)
All-powerful God, As we commemorate the lives of our loved ones who have died this All Souls’ Day (November 2), remember the prayers of the faithful people and their devotion toward all your sacrifices. Accept the confession of our sins and forgive the souls in purgatory, as you would do the same to us.
Let your mercy shine upon them; may your grace clothe them with the robe of purity. These we ask through your Son, who died on the cross. Amen.
Prayer For The Souls In Purgatory In God’s Mercy
God our Father, In your mercy, we rest our weary hearts. Hear our prayer as we beg you to have mercy on our faithful departed and all the holy souls in purgatory who have already been forgotten. As you have done for the rest of the world today, cover them with your Holy Spirit.
As one catholic church, together we spend time in Eucharistic adoration, receive holy communion, and accept your holy sacrifice for your servants. Hear the prayers of your people for the dead, Lord; may their souls experience eternal rest. Amen.
Prayer For The Souls In Purgatory And God’s Children
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Look into the hearts of your children, Lord, and allow us to feel your mercy through all your miracles. Allow your eternal light to shine on all the faithful departed and the poor souls in purgatory who were abandoned by their loved ones. Let your children experience eternal life in heaven.
Be the good father you are to your children and look into their sufferings, not at the indulgences they had before. Accept the penance we offer you, which we ask through the intercession of Mother Mary, all the angels, and all the saints. Amen.

Thursday
OLORD God almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Body and Blood of Thy divine Son Jesus, which He gave with His own hands upon the eve of His Passion to His beloved apostles to be their meat and drink, and which He left to His whole Church to be a perpetual sacrifice and the life-giving food of His own faithful people, deliver the souls in purgatory, and especially that one which was most devoted to this mystery of infinite love that it may with Thy divine Son, and with Thy Holy Spirit, ever praise Thee for Thy love therein in eternal glory. Amen.
Our Father … Hail Mary … De Profundis
Friday
OLORD God almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Blood which Thy divine Son shed on this day upon the wood of the Cross, especially from His most sacred hands and feet, deliver the souls in purgatory, and in particular that soul for which I am most bound to pray: that no neglect of mine may hinder it from praising Thee in Thy glory and blessing Thee forever. Amen.
Our Father … Hail Mary … De Profundis
Saturday
O LORD God almighty, I beseech Thee by the Precious Blood which gushed forth from the side of Thy divine Son Jesus in the sight of, and to the extreme pain of His most holy Mother, deliver the souls in purgatory, and especially that one amongst them all which was ever the most devout to this great Lady: that it may soon attain unto Thy glory, there to praise Thee in her and her in Thee, world without end. Amen.
Our Father … Hail Mary … De Profundis
