Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has dispelled rumors suggesting he might accept a vice-presidential role in the upcoming 2027 general elections. In a response that followed a recent interview he granted to News Central TV, Obi reiterated his unwavering commitment to addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges rather than being consumed by political ambitions for 2027.
According to the former Anambra State Governor, his primary focus remains on the current hardships Nigerians are facing, such as poverty, hunger, and insecurity. He remarked, “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV. In that interview, I took the opportunity to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative.”
Obi emphasized that his openness to collaborate with others is based on their willingness to improve Nigeria and not on political motives for personal gain. He said, “I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.”
Furthermore, Obi highlighted his dedication to solving critical issues, especially education, aiming to bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms. “When 2027 arrives, if I decide to run for any office, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election,” Obi noted. “I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living, and pull people out of poverty.”
He reaffirmed his allegiance to the Labour Party and expressed surprise at the misrepresentation of his words. “My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words. For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone, and it’s unequivocal,” he said.
Obi concluded by stressing his commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s progress, even without holding any political office, reaffirming that his work transcends positions of power.
