Senator Dino Melaye, a former representative of Kogi West and an ex-chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, has been suspended by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for alleged anti-party activities. This decision came after the Ward Party Executive Committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1, Kogi State, reviewed Melaye’s recent actions, which were deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.

The disciplinary process began with Melaye’s refusal to appear before the PDP’s Disciplinary Committee, despite being summoned on August 20, 2024. The committee was tasked with investigating several allegations of misconduct against him. His failure to honor the invitation was seen as a significant violation of the party’s constitution, leading to the eventual decision to suspend him.
Melaye’s suspension, effective immediately, was formalized in a resolution signed by Ward Chairman Abayomi Osamika and Secretary Yodson Dayo. According to the resolution, Melaye’s conduct not only disrespected the party’s leadership but also brought “embarrassment and disrepute” to the PDP. The party invoked Article 59(1) of its constitution, which grants local ward executives the power to take disciplinary action against members who breach party rules.
The suspension adds to a turbulent political period for Melaye, who has previously been in the spotlight for controversies surrounding his role in party politics. With this development, the PDP aims to uphold internal discipline and prevent further damage to its unity.
This move marks a crucial point in the party’s effort to maintain cohesion ahead of future elections, especially as Melaye was a high-profile figure in the party’s ranks.
The PDP, in its statement, has urged its members to remain committed to party loyalty and discipline, stressing the importance of collective efforts to strengthen the organization and ensure electoral success in the future.
